Bend Fall Festival October 5-7 A Central Oregon Celebration of The Harvest Season

A much-loved tradition, the festival brings two stages of free music, family activities, fine art, a conscious living space, food and beverages, fall-themed contests and more.

New this year is a series of kick-off concerts that will take place on Friday evening, October 5, and the Deschutes Brewery Homebrew Competition that will showcase a live tasting on The Peak 104.1 Mainstage on Sunday, October 7 at 11am.

“The soul of our festivals is bringing the vital spirit of art and artisans, musicians, families, food, and festive fare  to the streets of Downtown Bend” says Cameron Clark, owner of C3 Events. “The Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival is our favorite, celebrating the pristine nature of fall, harvest and coming together around warmth, comfort and friendship.”

fallfestivalFine Artist Promenade
Located on Wall Street between Franklin Avenue and Oregon Avenue
The Fine Artist Promenade for 2012 will be a lively mix of curated Art and Craft, showing work of over 125 participants. The Artists’ Runway sponsored by North Soles Footwear returns after a smashing hit last year, with two runway shows each day, showcasing the original clothing and accessories of Artist participants carrying fine art. The Studio Sale section has expanded from last year, with its focus on Sculpture, Painting, and Printmaking, as has the House and Home area, with works to tempt you as all our lives begin to return indoors in this harvest season. The promenade is a great place to start early holiday shopping.

Best of Jury: TJ Anderson- Lopez Island, WA
Growing up the son of a custom cabinetmaker, TJ has been exposed to wood from an early age. He has worked in cabinet making, home restoration and furniture making over the years.  After spending 24 years in the maritime industry, he now spends time in his wood studio. He specializes in unique turned bowls, platters and forms – both open and closed – as well as small furniture pieces. His bowls and forms are created from salvaged wood, with the goal of giving the wood another chapter in its life by turning it into something interesting, useful and hopefully beautiful.  “Once the lathe is turned on, the wood’s unique characteristics take over and I simply follow its lead in terms of grain orientation, design, shape and finish. My goal is not to achieve perfection, but to create a piece that not only is pleasing to look at but also feels good in the hand,” said TJ. All of his functional pieces are finished with pure walnut oil, so they are safe for use with food. A perfect addition to your fall harvest or holiday table!

The Artists’ Runway presented by North Soles Footwear
This year welcomes the second coming of the Artists’ Runway at Bend Fall Festival, first conceived of as a showcase for the original hand fabricated garments and accessories by the artists and craftspeople who participate. “When we started it came out of excitement with the combination of original fashion and repurposing so evident in the artisanal clothing,” explains Karin Roy, artist coordinator for C3 Events, producers of the Festival. “Because of my background in fashion, I naturally wanted to put it on a runway, and Cameron and Tiffany Clark jumped right onboard. Then we realized that by using the music stages, we could show not only clothing and accessories, but also 2- and 3-dimensional art to the audience who is there for the music, but might not otherwise walk the arts and crafts section, an introduction of sorts.”

The fiber artists on this year’s runway, sponsored by North Soles Footwear, will run the gamut from the edgier knitwear of Flood Clothing and Shabby Knapsacks who repurpose sweaters and jersey into warm, unique garments to Blossom Merz’s hand-woven wraps and ruanas, drawing some of their inspiration from the deep simplicity of monk’s garments seamlessly complementing a variety of attitudes. Models will be accessorized with jewelry, scarves and other fashions from artist attendees such as Stuart Breidenstein, Francois Schneyder and Union Studio Metalworks. They will also carry a piece of fine art from the Artist Promenade, from small sculptures to woodwork, paintings and glass. This show is truly an eclectic representation of the artisans who attend the festival—a live illustration of their fine work and personality. The Rubbish Renewed Eco Fashion Show will round out two of the shows with a vignette from their own collection.

Bringing The Homebrew To Center Stage: Deschutes Brewery Homebrew Competition With Live Tasting and Judging
The Deschutes Brewery Homebrew Competition will give 15 local homebrewers the unique chance to bring their craft out of their basements, garages and personal tasting circles and share it with some of Bend’s most esteemed brewers, all for the chance to win the grand prize “Brew Day” with Deschutes Brewery head brewer Robin Johnson.

The live tasting and competition of fresh-hop or harvest beers will take place on The Peak 104.1 Mainstage presented by AT&T on Oregon Avenue at 11am on Sunday, October 7 during the Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival presented by The Source Weekly. Interested homebrewers must sign up at the festival main bar on Oregon Avenue starting at 5pm on Friday, October 5. The first 15 to sign up will be accepted into the live tasting and competition that will take place on Sunday, October 7. The next 30 to sign up will have the opportunity to have their creation sampled by the Deschutes Brewery Sensory Panel at a later date.

“We are excited to do a homebrew event with C3 Events,” said Angela Jasus, field marketing and events manager with Deschutes Brewery. “Bend is becoming more and more of a mecca for creating craft beer and homebrewing is the heart and soul behind this industry! Brewing beer is truly a craft and brewers are the artisans–they get to experiment with different ingredients and materials to create many flavors and styles– it is an honor to be celebrating their creativity through this fun event at Bank of the Cascades Bend Fall Festival.”

Four esteemed judges from local breweries including Crux Fermentation Project, Deschutes Brewery and GoodLife Brewing will taste and rate the homebrews live on stage in front of the festival audience on Sunday. The competition MC will be Chelsea Woodmansee, winner of the 2011 Last Comic Standing Contest.

“We have such a wealth of brewing talent in Central Oregon, whether people are brewing in their homes or publicly for all of us,” said Tiffany Clark of C3 Events. “We are excited to produce an opportunity for the next noteworthy brewmaster of Central Oregon to be revealed.  We love fresh hop and harvest ales, and so the timing of this contest is particularly interesting for us.”

The winner of the competition will be announced live on stage on Sunday, October 7.

A tremendous and unique opportunity for homebrewers to get in front of Bend’s beer experts and leave with feedback that will help them hone their brew, the competition will also be a lively and entertaining treat for festival goers and a must-see component of the weekend’s festivities. For more information contact Melissa@c3events.com.

Deschutes Brewery beer specials will run during the competition at the Mainstage Bar on Oregon Avenue, 11am-12:30pm on Sunday, October 7.
