Central Oregon Community College’s (COCC) Big Band Jazz group is performing its winter concert at 7pm on Friday, March 8, in Wille Hall on the Bend campus. This is a free performance, with donations welcome. Visit centraloregonjazz.org to learn more.
The concert will feature the music of Oliver Nelson, a saxophone player who performed with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones and many other notable jazz musicians.
“He became a prolific composer and arranger, composing and arranging songs for small combos, big bands and television shows,” said Dave Sime, band director. “His 1961 album, titled ‘The Blues and the Abstract Truth,’ is regarded as one of the most significant recordings of its era.”
Sponsored by COCC, Big Band Jazz is a nonprofit that has been a part of the Central Oregon jazz scene for more than 30 years. There are 19 musicians enrolled in the COCC performance class this term. For more information, contact dsime2@cocc.edu.
