Scandal! Blackmail! Corruption! Full of Wilde’s well-known wit, rapid fire repartee and social commentary, “An Ideal Husband” is scathing satire of the British aristocracy filled to the brim with temptations, betrayals and secret liaisons. Sir Robert Chiltern is everything his wife gertrude admires: Handsome, noble, stalwart, loving, tender, and completely honest. But Mrs. Cheveley knows otherwise: dragging up a minor political indiscretion in Robert’s past, Cheveley plans to blackmail him into making her a very rich woman. Pressured into a moral dilemma. Robert must choose between committing another indiscretion, for Mrs. Cheveley’s benefit, or watching his marriage crumble if Gertrude learns he is not quite the ideal husband she had imagined.
