Journalist, author and teacher Grant McOmie has spent more than 30 years writing about the people, places, outdoor activities and environmental issues of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. His weekly Grant’s Getaways segment on Portland’s KGW News has earned him a following across the state as well as numerous Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts.

“By my calculations, I have written and produced thousands of segments and programs on the great Oregon outdoors over the past three decades,” says McOmie. He’ll bring stories of his travels and give people insight on some of his favorite Oregon getaways when he visits the East Bend and La Pine Libraries on Saturday, March 5. Both presentation are free and open to the public; books will be available for sale courtesy of Sunriver Books & Music.

In his book Grant’s Getaways: 101 Oregon Adventures, McOmie says that he enjoys encouraging people to lace up their hiking boots and hit the trail—or buckle up their seat belts and take to the roads—and discover a new place in their home state. “Just get out there,” he writes, “enjoy Oregon any time of year, and make some memories of your own.”

McOmie is a fifth-generation Oregon native, and his roots run deepest in our own Central Oregon region near Prineville and Redmond. He is the author of a series of books, including Grant’s Getaways: 101 Oregon Adventures and Grant’s Getaways: A Guide to Wildlife Watching in Oregon. His next book, Grant’s Getaways: Oregon Adventures for the Kids, will be published in 2017. He is the reporter and producer of the weekly Grant’s Getaways segments on KGW News.
