Raku Artists of Central Oregon

The Raku Artists of Central Oregon Annual Thanksgiving Weekend Raku Pottery Art Show Sale at November 25-26, 9:30am-4pm.  Great art works at reasonable prices including raku pottery, high-fired pottery, porcelain, jewelry other arts & crafts.  Spoil someone you love with a gift of h made pottery…or keep it for yourself!  
R.A.C.O. is a non-profit organization of artists that have been working in clay for over 20 years.  The group was started by Gloria Krug when she taught pottery at COCC continues with new old members.  New members are always welcome; the only requirement is an interest in the Raku firing process a desire to have fun.  
Raku is an ancient Japanese process where bisque fired ceramics are coated with special glazes that contain copper other minerals. After an initial firing to strengthen the pots glaze is applied they are fired in an outdoor kiln to approximately 1900F.  At that point the ceramic piece is removed from the kiln with tongs while still red hot placed in a bed of combustible materials, such as paper, wood shavings, leaves or straw.  After the combustibles ignite the firing pit covered to smother the fire smoke the glazes.  The result is spectacular colors, which may be iridescent, satiny, or glossy depending upon the chemical recipe of the glaze the flaming materials.
