The Nature of Words and Tin Pan Theater are partnering to host local artist Irene Hardwicke Olivieri to discuss her nature-inspired creative process in celebration of Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22.
Titled “I Love Your Secret: Turning Experiences and Emotions into Art,” Olivieri will share the creative process behind selected works from the initial feeling or experience that inspired it through rough sketches to the final painting.
As part of the program, Olivieri will present three talks throughout the day: “Turning Experiences and Emotions into Art,” a presentation for adults at 12pm and 7pm and “Insects, Animals and the Natural World,” a talk for young adults focused on the animals, insects and natural history of her paintings at 4pm.
“Irene’s process is unique—it gives voice to the emotional way we experience nature,” said Amy Mentuck, executive director of The Nature of Words. “When you look at her work, it’s obvious the subject isn’t a thing as much as it’s a feeling, experience or intuition.”
“I’ve never been one to see something—like a beautiful mountain or sky—and think ‘I want to paint that,’” said Olivieri. “Instead, I feel something intensely and want to paint that. I used to be shy to talk about the way I create because it seems so self-made and disorganized, but I love hearing other writers, musicians and artists talk about their work and process.”
All three presentations will take place at Tin Pan Theater, 869 NW Tin Pan Alley, in Bend. Admission is $5 at the door; children 16 and under are admitted free to the young adult presentation. Copies of Olivieri’s book, Closer to Wildness, will be on sale and available for signing, with all proceeds benefiting The Nature of Words.
