Local history buff Keith Cloudas presents a short history of the Mighty 8th Air Force in Europe during WWII.
Following the presentation, veteran B-17 gunner Johnny Kelm will share his personal account of his experience. The presentation is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 at 2pm at the Redmond Public Library and is part of the Know War series being offered at the Deschutes Public Library during the month of March. The program is free and open to the public.
The 8th Air Force became the greatest air armada in history during WWII and reached a total strength of more than 200,000 individuals. The “Mighty 8th” could dispatch more than 2,000 four-engine bombers and 1,000 soldiers on a single mission. During WWII the Mighty 8th amassed an impressive fighting record but suffered significant losses totaling one-half of the U.S. Army Air Force casualties.
