Sue Vordenberg’s abstract and realistic paintings have been described as being Bold, Curious and Eclectic. Vordenberg begins her paintings with reference photos as her starting point regardless of subject. Sometimes, she works abstractly from the beginning, but more often she begins realistically. Then her curiosity leads her to working the idea more unconventionally resulting in either abstraction or surrealism. Vordenberg wants her paintings to first stimulate and compel a visceral reaction in viewers and second to stimulate the viewers’ curiosity both about her artistic decisions, and their own reaction to the painting. The subject portrayed may be either strongly bold or subtly bold but, there nearly always will be some degree of “boldness” in her interpretation, with color choices often driving the final effect. Vodenberg paints in acrylic and uses both flat brushes and palette knives. Sometimes she adds collage or uses a gel plate. Vordenberg believes strongly in life-long learning and so she gleefully experiments with subject, composition, technique and effect.
